Up North Green Party

A Local of the Green Party of Michigan

Charlevoix Chapter Minutes
5/21/03

Green Party met at Dilworth Hotel in Boyne City.

Financial report was provided.

Business:

Item 1. Kite-In to be held June 14. GP will have a table and Jean has been working on green bandanas for distribution. Discussion of political/informational handouts.

Item 2. Peace efforts and Memorial Day participation. Since M. Day is a private parade (at least in Harbor) it was agreed that this group wouldn't take part unless approved. Doubtful at present. May 28 at 5:30 will be a meeting of peace groups in Petoskey at Horizon Books.

Item 3. Environmental. Walmart in Charlevoix--WATCH is involved and is monitoring and doing what they can. Other environmental concerns include the marina in Boyne and Walloon Lake. Jean talked about coalescing activism in this area around the wind generator issue, using it as a symbolic representation of peace/environmental concerns. Char pointed out that the wind generator project is a sensitive topic for some. Bruce will look for input from Michael. Joanne talked eloquently on the need for individual commitment. Agreed to plan a work day for one small project (at a time), to begin at the Jordan River on Saturday June 21 from 10 to finish (or 4). Joanne presented info about the new Lake to Lake Trail in Charlevoix.

Item 4. Politics. GP will support Shirley Gibson in the fall election. Looking for other candidates. Nurse for mayor?

Discussion of Instant Runoff Voting (IRV). There was a recent article in the Traverse Record Eagle. Need to identify ways to inform people about IRV.

NEXT MEETING: June 11 from 6pm to 9pm at the Dilworth in Boyne City.
